There are areas in your house that need special attention when it comes to cleaning. Your patios, driveways, and fences are areas that have always required you to take professional help when it comes to cleaning them but pressure washers have made your job surprisingly easier. Packed with a high powered hose and compact design that makes it suitable for most homes, you can now get professional-level cleaning for your furniture and driveways at home for free.

Pressure washers for home are usually categorized into two types, gas and electric. Electric pressure washers need to be connected to an outlet and are pumped by electricity. On the other hand, gas pressure washers have internal combustion engines that drive the pump.

Though gas washers are bigger compared to electric ones, they offer much more in terms of power and durability. They are also better suited for outer areas and job sites as there’s no electricity there.

Things to look for in a gas pressure washer

Gas pressure washers, by default, are bigger compared to the electric ones and hold a lot of power. Owning a gas pressure washer becomes easier if you already own products like gas lawnmower or chainsaw. Here are the things you must look for while buying a gas pressure washer.

1. Does it have a recoil or electric starter?

A gas pressure washer is powered by an internal combustion engine that is either made with an electric starter or a recoil one. In some cases, it has both the starters for added power. However, engines with electric starters are more expensive compared to the Recoil one. Therefore, depending on the power you need and the kind of combustion engine you want, you can decide upon the washer you wish to buy.

2. Does it run on hot water or cold water?

Gas pressure washers are powered by gas but don’t necessarily use hot water for the cleaning job. Therefore, you can either buy a washer with hot water or cold water. The hot water washers come with a boiler that heats the water up to 140 F more than its current temperature. Hot water works as a much better cleaner compared to cold and can get rid of the toughest of stains with ease. This is why dishwashers too, make use of hot water to clean your dishes.

3. How is its carriage frame construction?

Bigger gas pressure washers require more space over its foundation to accommodate the larger engine and pump. The framework should thus, be able to support it and should contain a vibration isolator engine mounting.

4. How tough are the tires?

Since gas pressure washers are heavier and bigger than the electric ones, they must have wheels under them for the ease of movement. The wheels under the heavy body should also be heavy-duty pneumatic tires that can handle the weight of the engine and pump with ease. Thus, always move the machine around a little bit and see if the lower part of it can take the weight of the upper before making a decision.

5. How is gasoline storage?

Gas pressure washers run on gasoline to power the internal combustion engine. Thus, you need to make sure that the tank is large enough to hold appropriate fuel for cleaning and doesn’t leak as well. Apart from that, you also need to take off the gasoline while storing the washer. You must always remove the gasoline from the tank so it isn’t a problem. The gasoline starts losing its effect after a couple of months and thus, should be removed after every use or changed in 3-4 months in the tank.

6. Does it have a direct driven or belt driven pump?

The water pump in the gas pressure washer is driven either directly or through a belt. If the water pump in your washer is direct driven, the product will be a lot cheaper and compact. However, the pump can heat up with extended use and can overheat the engine as well. It also makes the machine vibrate a lot more and is noisier compared to the belt-driven pump. The belt-driven pump doesn’t overheat even with extended use, improving the durability of the pressure washer. However, it makes the washer bulkier and reduces its overall PSI as well.

Final Thoughts

Gas pressure washers offer a lot to home residents in terms of heavy-duty cleaning. They’re able to do a thoroughly professional job in a matter of hours and with a lot lesser money. Make sure that you choose a washer that fits perfectly into your home and caters to all your major needs.
